Read half of James Galway's book and learned a lot about playing flute. I'd like to read it again. 10. PractisingThe beginner should not practise too much. Until you have begun to develop the bascis of flute-plyaing, it is a mistake to practise on regardless, incorporating faults and weaknesses into your technique.Tackle things one at a time, to be patient, to be happy about small advances.Once you have the basics under elementary control - holding the flute steady, finding the notes readily, with the breathing and embouchure organized - you will be able to concentrate on what you are playing, and then is the moment to begin practising for as long as you can stand it and the other demands of your life allow.- Be active in your practice.
- Try to sound happy.
- Insist on a beautiful sound.
- Don't leave any note unattended.
More practical guidelines- Don't always play things at full speed.
- Don't play past the difficulties that crop up.
- Pay constant attention to detail.
- Don't be afraid to test out different routines.
- Practice is, ultimately, your own responsibility.
Today I tried to concentrate on each note, and make sure all notes are beautiful. Also learned to direct air stream from lips to create sharper tones, hold the flute steady, and play slowly. Much more progress.
